I have lived in various parts of Sussex for the past twelve years now and have often walked close to herds of cows whilst exploring the countryside. A recent article in The Guardian magazine has changed the way I think about these seemingly friendly bovine grazers.
The most startling detail contained within the article is that more people are killed by cows each year than they are by sharks! Food for thought? My advice is that if you see a herd of cows advancing towards you, just keep mooooooving!

WOW, love this stat!
One of my relatives – a farmer – said she'd never walk through a filed of cows she did not know without carrying a stick!
I actually had a 'run in' with cows a while ago while I was walking my parent's dog. We got chased across the field and the poor dog is now terrified of them, he doesn't find sheep so scary though
.
Classic, I always suspected that sharks weren't that dangerous!
In the Peaks once, we had walked all day with Reef my dog and the last part of our walk was through a field full of bullocks! No way I thought – cant turn back , I need a pint! Some intrepid locals were at the gate and worked with us – they walked through the herd taking the inquisitive beasts one way – whilst we walked promptly to the next empty field…. traveling with locals as well as "like a local" often helps!
